Valley Roof Repair

Introduction to Valley Roof Repair

The roof valley is the place in which two roof slopes connect, allowing water to flow into the gutters. Frequent leaks and cracks can start from the valley of the roof, because it is relatively a sensitive spot in the construction of the framework. The lack of maintenance or other external factors can lead to cracks. If this area is not repaired immediately, the problem will become much more serious and will require professional help, because of it being a junction place. Of course, for a longer life span of the valley roof one must perform maintenance on it, several times a year.

Causes Leading to Valley Roof Repair

Finding the cause can be a bit difficult, but once it is done, it can offer valuable information for keeping the roof in good shape for the future. By finding the weak spots and the possible factors of wearing, one can prevent further damage. One of the causes that lead to problems is that the roofing nails are not placed in their proper place, and so they put tension on the tiles, thus creating excess usage over the time. The best way to initially fix them to avoid problems in the future is to place them at least by 6 inches from the seam area.

Another cause is due to the deteriorated tiles. These protect the valley so that is why they are the most exposed to damaging factors. Also, if the shingles are held with sealants instead of nails, not recommended by experts, there can be a problem in case of a stormy climate. Winds and water can wear down the shingles or even blow them away. To fix this, one should nail them in. Also, one should keep in mind that the valley is a good place for collecting leaves, dirt, moss and other debris. Because of this, build-ups can often appear which lead to blockages. It's best to keep this maintained by checking and cleaning it at least two times a year.

Valley Roof Repair

Repairing the roof valley depends on the materials that have been used for its construction. The most frequently used is metal. In this case, the operation starts by cleaning with a wire brush the area that needs repair. In case of a small hole, the area must be enlarged by about 2 inches. After this, you should apply sealant on and around it and cover it with roofing felt. Another layer of sealant must be applied over it and after that it must be covered with liquid bitumen for waterproofing. For this, use a brush moistened with water.

For larger cracks in the valley, the area must be cleaned with a wire brush and rubbed with sandpaper. After wipe cleaning some flashing-strip primer must be applied over the crack. You should then allow it to dry for half an hour. After drying, take a piece of flashing strip for extending the repair area by about 2 inches, and then peel the backing strip. For finishing, it must be rolled down using a steam roller.
